Two bodies have been recovered from the Patapsco River in Baltimore as investigators transition from a recovery mode to a salvage operation following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge earlier this week. Crews are now searching for four other individuals who fell into the water and are presumed dead.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has raised a new concern, stating that the cargo ship involved in the bridge crash was carrying hazardous materials. This development has prompted the investigation to enter a new phase on Thursday.

Divers managed to retrieve the bodies of two missing workers, identified as 35-year-old Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes and 26-year-old Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera. Both individuals were found in a submerged red pickup truck on Wednesday.

Among the four individuals still missing and presumed dead are Miguel Luna from El Salvador and Maynor Suazo Sandoval from Honduras. Luna, a father of three, and Sandoval, a father of two, are just two examples of the many Baltimore residents contributing to the community.

The recovery effort has been hindered by an “abundance of twisted metal” from the collapsed Key Bridge, making it unsafe for divers to navigate the water. Underwater drones have provided imagery showing significant debris from the bridge collapse, posing challenges for search and rescue operations.

Furthermore, there are concerns regarding the cargo ship’s cargo, with 13 damaged containers being inspected for potential hazardous materials. The ship was loaded with 4,700 containers, 56 of which contained hazardous substances. However, officials have stated that there is no immediate threat to public safety.

During a White House briefing, Vice Adm. Peter Gautier of the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that the cargo ship did not leak fuel or take on water. The estimated cost of rebuilding the bridge remains unknown, but Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized that the process will be neither quick nor inexpensive.

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy revealed that the cargo ship was carrying 764 tons of hazardous materials, including corrosives, flammables, and lithium-ion batteries. Some containers were breached, resulting in a potential oil spill. The NTSB is working to recover data from the ship’s recorders to determine the cause of the collision.

The Dali cargo ship, chartered by Maersk, had two deficiencies since its construction in 2015, according to Equasis records. These deficiencies were related to propulsion machinery and structural conditions, raising questions about the vessel’s maintenance and seaworthiness.

As the investigation into the Baltimore bridge collapse continues, authorities are focused on recovery efforts and ensuring the safety of the surrounding area. The tragic incident has highlighted the importance of thorough safety measures in maritime operations to prevent similar tragedies in the future..
