El Paso County sheriff’s detectives are currently investigating two tragic separate drownings in canals close to the U.S.-Mexico border. The bodies of the victims were discovered around 10:15 a.m. on a Wednesday, March 27, in different locations in canals in San Elizario and Tornillo, as confirmed by a spokesman from the Sheriff’s Office.
The identities of the drowning victims have yet to be revealed, as investigations are ongoing by the sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit. One body was located in San Elizario in the 13600 block of Petunia Drive, along a canal that runs parallel to the Rio Grande. The second body was found in the 200 block of Tornillo Guadalupe Road in Tornillo, near the Alamo Alto Drain and the Tornillo Canal.
**Recent Canal Rescues and Warnings from Border Patrol**
Just a week prior, on March 19, the El Paso Fire Department’s Water Rescue Team managed to save two individuals in a canal near Zaragoza Road in the Lower Valley. There was a report of a possible third person in the water, but unfortunately, they could not be located.

Border Patrol issued a seasonal warning regarding the dangers of entering canals that run parallel to the Rio Grande. With the rivers and canals currently flowing with large amounts of water released from upstream reservoirs in New Mexico for the irrigation season, the risks are higher. Undocumented migrants are strongly advised against jumping into these canals to evade Border Patrol, as seemingly calm waters may hide strong currents underneath.
