Police Response and Investigation

Following the report of shots fired, law enforcement officials responded swiftly to the scene. They discovered that gunshots had been exchanged between a dark-colored Dodge Dart and a dark-colored Ford Explorer as they drove through residential streets between Forest and Stevens avenues. Two days later, an officer found the Dodge Dart with bullet holes near 77 Grant St.

The Portland Special Reaction Team conducted a thorough search of the vehicle and the residence of the registered owner. It was revealed that a 17-year-old male had been in possession of the Dodge Dart during the shooting. Subsequently, he was arrested and charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and detained at the Longcreek Youth Development Center.

Uncovering a Drug Trafficking Network

As detectives delved deeper into the case, they were able to identify the owner of the Ford Explorer and uncovered a significant drug trafficking network. This led to the identification of several houses in Portland, Gray, and New Gloucester being used by individuals involved in the shooting and other criminal activities.

On March 15, the Special Reaction Team conducted a search of 1445 Forest Ave., where they discovered a handgun, cocaine, and evidence of drug trafficking. This laid the groundwork for further action to be taken.

High-Risk Search Warrants Executed

On March 22, detectives executed three high-risk search warrants in collaboration with Portland’s Special Reaction Team, the Maine State Police Tactical Team, and agents from the FBI Southern Maine Gang Task Force. The coordinated efforts led to simultaneous searches at 88 Skips Way and 84 Highview Drive in New Gloucester, as well as 38 Blackthorne Lane in Gray.

During the search at Skips Way, a vehicle was seen fleeing the area at high speed. Subsequently, two 17-year-old males were apprehended in Portland after being located in a vehicle matching the description of the one that fled. The Special Reaction Team seized three handguns, $2,200 in cash, and nearly a pound of cocaine from the vehicle.

Seizures and Ongoing Investigation

In total, law enforcement officials seized six handguns, a shotgun, over 400 grams of cocaine, and more than $44,000 in cash. The Ford Explorer, located at the Blackthorne Lane address, was also searched as part of the ongoing investigation.

The investigation into this drug trafficking network and the violent incident is still ongoing, with law enforcement expressing gratitude to the public for their assistance. The authorities highlighted the concerning level of violence associated with the group of youthful individuals involved, whose ages range from 16 to 19 years old.
