State police have released new images of Roscoe, a robotic K9 that was shot three times during a tense standoff with an armed man in Hyannis last month. The incident took place at a home on St. Francis Circle, where Justin Moreira, 30, held his mother at knifepoint. Moreira was later arrested on multiple charges, including attempted murder and firearms offenses.

Robotic dogs like Roscoe are now being used by the State Police Bomb Squad to assist in dangerous situations, allowing authorities to gather crucial intelligence and keep first responders safe. During the standoff, Roscoe and another robotic K9, Spot, were deployed to assess the situation. Unfortunately, both robots were partially disabled after being shot at by Moreira.
The use of robotic K9s in police responses has proven to be beneficial in situations where human operators could be at risk. These mobile platforms are capable of opening doors and ascending stairs in tactical missions involving armed suspects, providing critical room clearance and situational awareness capabilities.
Boston Dynamics, the manufacturer of the robotic K9s, stated that this was the first time a Spot robot had been shot during a police deployment. These robots have a wide range of uses, including hazardous gas detection, search and rescue operations, and structural assessments following disasters.
During the standoff on Cape Cod, the SWAT Team utilized the robotic K9s to safely gather intelligence on the suspect and the home’s interior. A trooper deployed Spot through the top floors of the home before sending Roscoe into the basement. However, Moreira confronted Roscoe and shot the robot three times, rendering it inoperable.

After shooting at Roscoe, Moreira targeted another robotic dog outside the home, but missed and hit an above-ground pool instead. SWAT operators then introduced tear gas into the house, prompting Moreira to surrender and be taken into custody by Barnstable Police.
The following day, Roscoe was taken to Boston Dynamics for assessment and to remove the projectiles. The process of replacing Roscoe with a new robotic K9 is now underway. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of utilizing technology to keep first responders safe in dangerous situations.
