A tragic incident unfolded in Far Rockaway, Queens, resulting in the death of NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller during a routine traffic stop. The 31-year-old officer, who resided in Massapequa Park with his wife Stephanie and young son, had joined the force in February 2021.

The fatal encounter took place on Mott Avenue at approximately 5:45 p.m. Monday when Diller and his partner pulled over a vehicle with two occupants for illegally parking at a bus stop. The officers suspected the men were casing a nearby T-Mobile store.

According to authorities, when asked to exit the vehicle, the passenger brandished a gun and refused to comply. The suspect, identified as Guy Rivera, 34, then fired at Diller, hitting him below his bullet-resistant vest. In response, Diller’s partner fired back, injuring Rivera in the back.

Despite being rushed to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition, Diller succumbed to his injuries. Two firearms were recovered from the scene, shedding light on the violent nature of the confrontation.

Rivera, with a history of 21 arrests, including nine felonies, had been released from prison in September 2021 after serving time for criminal sale of a controlled substance. His accomplice, Lindy Jones, 41, had 14 prior arrests and was out on bail for possession of a loaded firearm in Far Rockaway.

Mayor Eric Adams expressed outrage over the incident, highlighting the challenges posed by repeat offenders in the city. He emphasised the need for a united front between law enforcement and the community against violent criminals.
