Harshkumar Ramanlal Patel, 28, also known as “Dirty Harry,” stands accused of orchestrating the ill-fated journey that led to the deaths of Jagdish Patel, his wife Vaishaliben, and their two young children, Vihangi and Dharmik. The Patels hailed from the village of Dingucha in Gujarat, India, seeking a better life in the United States.
The Alleged Driver: Steve Shand
The man behind the wheel during the tragic border crossing was Steve Shand, a Florida resident who had been arrested and charged with human smuggling prior to this incident. Shand, who has pleaded not guilty, was reportedly hired by Patel to transport the Indian nationals from the Canadian border to the Chicago area.

According to court documents, the ill-fated journey began when Shand’s rented van was stopped by U.S. Border Patrol agents in Minnesota.
