Background of Joel Anderson

Anderson had been behind bars since 2017, serving time for other crimes, including arson. His previous sentences came to an end in October 2022, but he remained in custody awaiting trial for the second-degree murder of Paddock. Following a trial held in Vancouver Supreme Court last year, Anderson was found guilty of the lesser offence of manslaughter.

Sentencing Details

During the sentencing, Justice E. David Crossin credited Anderson for 539 days served, considering each pre-trial day as 1.5 days, totaling 809 days served. With this calculation, Anderson is left with 1,633.5 days to serve for his manslaughter conviction, equivalent to four years and seven months.

Victim Impact Statement

During the sentencing, the judge acknowledged a victim impact statement from Paddock’s daughter, who expressed the deep emotional toll she has endured since her father’s tragic death. She shared feelings of sadness, anxiety, and depression, highlighting the lasting impact of losing her father in such a violent manner.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The fatal incident occurred in the early hours of August 22, 2017, when Trail police responded to reports of a “man down” on Bay Avenue near Highway 3B. Upon arrival, officers found Paddock lying unconscious in the road, bleeding from his head. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Paddock never regained consciousness and passed away 27 days later.

While the judge acknowledged the vicious nature of the assault, he expressed uncertainty regarding Anderson’s intent to kill.
