The Incident

In a recent disturbing incident in Davenport, a 52-year-old driver, Granvell K. Ramey, is facing multiple charges after a pedestrian was seriously injured by a truck. The Davenport police have reported that the victim, a 43-year-old woman, sustained severe injuries in the accident that took place at the intersection of Rockingham Road and South Concord Street.

Charges Faced by Ramey

Granvell K. Ramey is facing a slew of charges in connection with the incident. These include serious injury by vehicle – reckless use of an electronic device, serious injury hit and run, prevention of apprehension or obstructing prosecution, reckless driving, failure to wear a seat belt, failure to obey stop signs (five counts), roadways laned for traffic, turning at intersections, failure to yield to a pedestrian, and use of an electronic communication device while driving.

The Investigation

According to arrest affidavits, the Davenport Police responded to the hit-and-run crash involving a tow truck and a pedestrian after 7:30 p.m. on March 13. Video footage obtained from a nearby business showed the incident, and the suspect truck, a 2016 gray Freightliner, was found in a nearby tow yard. Ramey was identified as the driver of the tow truck by his co-workers and through video footage.

The Victim’s Injuries

The victim suffered serious injuries in the accident, including a right femur fracture, pelvic fracture, left pneumothorax, and several rib fractures. The police allege that Ramey was using and texting on his phone while driving the truck just before running over the victim, who had the right of way and the walk sign from the crosswalk.

Ramey’s Actions

Ramey is accused of knowingly leaving the scene of the serious injury crash. Video evidence shows that he was not wearing a seat belt during the drive from the 1300 block of Emerald Drive to the tow yard in the 900 block of South Rolff Street. Additionally, Ramey failed to stop at multiple stop signs and did not yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Consequences of Ramey’s Actions

In a consent search, officers discovered that Ramey had destroyed text messages and phone call records from his cell phone after the crash. This prevented the officers from confirming what was seen in the in-cab video footage of Ramey using his mobile phone while driving. The pedestrian victim was transported to a hospital for treatment following the incident.
