State fire officials have been left puzzled after failing to determine the cause of a devastating fire that tragically claimed the life of a 76-year-old woman in northwest Ocala just before Christmas. The Bureau of Fire, Arson and Explosives conducted a thorough investigation, meticulously examining the residence in an attempt to pinpoint where the fire originated. Despite their efforts, the exact source of the fire remains a mystery.

According to the report, officials believe the fire started in the northwest area of the front room. This conclusion was reached after analysing burn patterns, fire tracking, and witness statements. The team investigating the incident carefully removed materials from the room but were unable to definitively determine the point of origin. There was no evidence of smoking materials or flammable liquids found at the scene. As a result, the classification of the fire remains undetermined.
On December 8, 2023, Ocala Fire Rescue firefighters responded to a call about smoke emanating from the residence at 1905 NW 24th Court. Upon arrival, they were met with heavy smoke and flames engulfing the structure, with a large portion of the roof already burned. Neighbors had attempted to alert the occupant of the home by banging on the door before firefighters arrived. Unfortunately, they were unable to enter the home due to the intense smoke.
Firefighters bravely entered the burning building and discovered the occupant, a woman, lying face down in the hallway. The victim, later identified as Constance Belvin, was swiftly removed from the home and CPR was administered at the scene. She was rushed to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries. The cause of death was determined to be smoke inhalation, and the Medical Examiner’s Office ruled it as an accident.
