The incident occurred on Jonesville Lockhart Highway on March 16, at around 4:10 p.m., when a sedan collided head-on with a pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction.

The two soldiers who tragically lost their lives in the crash have been identified as Spc. Kristal Lopez and Carol Santiago. Both women were just 19 years old and had promising careers ahead of them in the National Guard. Carol Santiago, a human resources specialist assigned to the 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade, was the passenger in the sedan and sadly died at the scene of the crash. Spc. Kristal Lopez, a paralegal specialist also assigned to the 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade, succumbed to her injuries a week later on March 23 at Spartanburg Regional Hospital.
