A tragic incident has left the community of Washington Township in Gloucester County reeling after the death of 16-year-old high school student Sophia Bennett. The young girl, who was a beloved member of the school swim team and softball player, was killed in a devastating crash on Friday night in Deptford.

According to reports from the Deptford police, the fatal crash occurred around 8 pm at the intersection of Hurfville Road and Deptford Center Road. Bennett was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the collision and tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, a 17-year-old boy from Gibbstown, was seriously injured and taken to Cooper University Hospital for treatment.

The other vehicle involved in the crash was driven by a 27-year-old woman from Deptford, who also sustained injuries and was transported to Jefferson Hospital for medical care.

Sophia Bennett, described as a “beautiful person” by those who knew her, was a sophomore at Washington Township High School. District Superintendent Eric Hibbs and Principal Raymond Anderson shared their condolences, highlighting Bennett’s warmth, kindness, and spirit that touched the lives of many in the school community.
