After dialing a number she found online, Sophia was connected to an individual who claimed to be a representative of the grocery platform. This imposter promised her a refund and guided her through a series of steps, ultimately coercing her into revealing sensitive information, including her UPI PIN.

The Consequences

Following the scammer’s instructions, Sophia received a WhatsApp message containing a purported UPI ID number “081958.” Unaware of the deceit unfolding, she proceeded to initiate a transfer using her digital payment app. Unfortunately, this action led to Sophia entering her UPI PIN, resulting in a direct debit from her account. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Sophia sought help by reaching out to the cyber helpline at 1930 before lodging a formal complaint with the Byatarayanapura police.

A senior police official confirmed that the case has been registered under the Information Technology Act, with investigations underway to trace and apprehend the perpetrator.
