NTSA Detains Pedestrians for Failing to Use Footpaths and Footbridges

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has taken a strong stance against pedestrians who fail to use designated footpaths and footbridges. Several pedestrians were detained for disregarding traffic rules and putting their safety at risk. NTSA emphasised the importance of using available crossing points to prevent accidents.

Increasing Road Crash Fatalities

According to NTSA data, the number of deaths from road crashes has risen this year compared to last year. Between January 1 to March 20, a total of 1,026 lives were lost in road accidents. This marks a 7 per cent increase from the 956 fatalities recorded during the same period in 2023. Pedestrians accounted for the highest number of fatalities at 384, followed by motorcyclists and passengers.

Enforcement of Traffic Laws

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki appeared before the National Assembly Committee on Transport and Infrastructure to discuss the enforcement of traffic laws to enhance road safety. The police Traffic Department has been conducting operations to curb road crashes, with a focus on public service vehicles. Kindiki highlighted the importance of joint enforcement exercises with NTSA and the identification of drunk driving as a major cause of accidents.

Joint Enforcement Exercises

The Kenya Police Traffic Department, in collaboration with NTSA, conducts planned and impromptu operations targeting drivers who violate traffic laws. During a recent exercise, 1,086 drivers were arrested and charged for drunk driving using breathalyzers. The department also focuses on motorcyclists who fail to comply with road regulations to ensure the safety of all road users.

Efforts to Improve Road Safety

NTSA urged pedestrians to observe traffic rules and use designated crossing points to prevent accidents. The authority is working towards reducing road crash fatalities through increased enforcement and public awareness campaigns. By promoting safe road practices and ensuring compliance with traffic laws, NTSA aims to create a safer environment for all road users..
