YARMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS – A shocking incident unfolded on Great Western Road in Yarmouth on Saturday, March 23, 2024, when a vehicle crashed and landed on its roof. The scene was chaotic, with damage to a guardrail and a large tree, and the vehicle coming to rest upside-down near a utility shed at the edge of a golf course. Miraculously, there were no initial reports of injuries, but the situation quickly took a dramatic turn.

According to police reports filed in Barnstable District Court, Officer Jason Batchelder made contact with Christ Amezquita, who claimed to be the lone occupant and operator of the vehicle. Amezquita stated that he had swerved to avoid a car pulling out onto Great Western Road just before the crash. However, his behaviour raised concerns among officers and witnesses. Described as “incredibly animated and erratic,” Amezquita was reportedly uncooperative during the investigation for alleged drunk driving.
A strong odor of alcohol emanated from Amezquita, and his behaviour only escalated as he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. At Cape Cod Hospital, where he was taken for medical treatment, Amezquita’s erratic behaviour continued. Hospital staff drew his blood for testing, which Officer Batchelder intends to subpoena as part of his investigation.
Sergeant Dianna Wells of the Yarmouth Police detailed Amezquita’s volatile behaviour, noting his slurred speech, unsteadiness, and emotional outbursts. Amezquita’s actions at the scene and subsequent arrest led to a messy situation, requiring two tow trucks to flip and remove the vehicle and the Yarmouth Fire Department to address fluid spills.
At police headquarters, Amezquita’s behaviour did not improve. He reportedly made disrespectful comments towards officers and invoked his ethnicity in an attempt to deflect responsibility. Charged with multiple offences, including Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol – 2nd Offense and Speeding, Amezquita’s past record reveals a history of similar incidents.
