BASTROP COUNTY, Texas – Tragic School Bus Crash Claims Two Lives
A devastating school bus crash outside of Austin, Texas has left the community reeling after claiming the lives of a 5-year-old boy and another individual. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon following a field trip and has sent shockwaves through the Hays CISD community.

Victims Identified
The preschooler, identified as Ulises Rodriguez Montoya, was described by the district as a young boy who loved his family, dinosaurs, the color green, and going to school. His untimely death has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him.
Additionally, 33-year-old Ryan Wallace from Bastrop, Texas, also tragically lost his life in the crash. Authorities clarified that Wallace was driving a Hyundai at the time of the incident, not a Dodge Charger as initially reported.
Details of the Crash
The school bus was transporting 44 pre-kindergarten students from Tom Green Elementary School and 11 adults back from a field trip to the Bastrop Zoo when tragedy struck. The bus was hit by a cement truck that swerved into its lane of traffic, resulting in the fatal collision.
A total of 51 individuals were injured in the crash, although the severity of their injuries remains unknown at this time. Charges have not been filed against the driver of the cement truck involved in the collision.

Community Support
In the wake of this heartbreaking incident, Tom Green Elementary School has closed its doors to allow for grieving and healing. Counselors have been made available to support students and staff during this difficult time.
Ulises’ pre-K bilingual teacher, Naira (Dina) Solís Shears, fondly remembered the young boy as a source of happiness and creativity. His love for drawing dinosaurs and telling stories endeared him to all who knew him.
Support for the Families
To aid with funeral expenses and other unanticipated costs, the district has shared a GoFundMe page for Ulises’ family. Additionally, a separate fund has been set up to support the Tom Green Elementary community during this challenging period.
As the community mourns the loss of two lives in this tragic accident, the outpouring of support and solidarity serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the human spirit in times of adversity.
