BASTROP COUNTY, Texas – A Tragic School Bus Crash Claims the Lives of Two Individuals

A heartbreaking incident occurred outside of Austin, Texas, where a school bus carrying 44 pre-kindergarten students from Tom Green Elementary School and 11 adults was involved in a fatal crash. The bus was returning from a field trip to the Bastrop Zoo when tragedy struck on Friday afternoon along State Highway 21 near the Travis/Bastrop County line, approximately 50 miles east of downtown Austin.

Victims Identified

Among the two individuals who lost their lives in the devastating crash was 5-year-old Ulises Rodriguez Montoya, a preschooler who was described by Hays CISD as a child who loved his family, dinosaurs, the color green, and going to school. The district mourned the loss of this young life, emphasizing the impact Ulises had on those around him.

Details of the Crash

The school bus was hit by a cement truck that swerved into its lane of traffic, leading to the fatal collision. In addition to Ulises, 33-year-old Ryan Wallace from Bastrop, Texas, also tragically lost his life in the crash. Initial reports had misidentified Wallace’s vehicle as a Dodge Charger, clarifying that he was driving a Hyundai at the time of the incident.

Injuries and Response

A total of 51 people sustained injuries in the crash, with their current conditions remaining unknown. The community rallied around Tom Green Elementary School, which was closed on Monday to provide support for students and staff members affected by the tragedy. Counselors were made available to offer assistance during this difficult time.

Remembering Ulises

Ulises’ pre-K bilingual teacher, Naira (Dina) Solís Shears, fondly remembered the young boy as a child brimming with happiness and creativity. She highlighted his talent for drawing, particularly his love for sketching dinosaurs. Ulises’ infectious joy and loving nature left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
