BASTROP COUNTY Tragedy: 5-Year-Old Boy Among Victims of Fatal School Bus Crash

A devastating school bus crash outside of Austin, Texas, has left the community reeling as two lives were tragically lost, including that of a 5-year-old boy. The young victim, Ulises Rodriguez Montoya, was described by Hays CISD as a child who loved his family, dinosaurs, the color green, and going to school.

The incident took place on State Highway 21 near the Travis/Bastrop County line, approximately 50 miles east of downtown Austin. The bus was transporting 44 pre-kindergarten students from Tom Green Elementary School, along with 11 adults, back from a field trip to the Bastrop Zoo when tragedy struck.

According to the district, the bus was struck by a cement truck that veered into its lane of traffic, leading to the fatal crash. Sadly, Ulises succumbed to his injuries sustained in the collision, along with another victim, 33-year-old Ryan Wallace from Bastrop, Texas, who was driving a Hyundai at the time of the incident.

In total, 51 individuals were injured in the crash, with their current conditions remaining unknown. The community has come together to support the families affected by this tragedy, with Tom Green Elementary School closed on Monday to provide counseling services for students and staff.

Ulises’ pre-K bilingual teacher, Naira (Dina) Solís Shears, shared heartfelt memories of the young boy, highlighting his infectious happiness, talent for drawing dinosaurs, and love for storytelling. She emphasized that Ulises was a bright and loving child who touched the lives of those around him.

As the community mourns the loss of these two individuals, efforts are underway to support their families during this difficult time. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with Ulises’ funeral expenses, as well as a general fund to aid with medical and other unforeseen costs for those affected by the tragedy.

The Bastrop County community is coming together to offer support and comfort to those impacted by this heartbreaking event. The memories of Ulises and Ryan will live on in the hearts of those who knew them, as the community rallies around their families during this time of sorrow.
