Sophia Bennett : NJ Town Mourns Teen Killed in Crash

A tragic incident occurred in Gloucester County over the weekend, as 16-year-old high school student Sophia Bennett lost her life in a fatal crash in Deptford on Friday night. The Washington Township community is now mourning the loss of a young life cut short.

The crash took place around 8 p.m. at the intersection of Hurfville Road and Deptford Center Road, involving two vehicles. Bennett was the passenger in one of the vehicles and tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The driver, a 17-year-old boy from Gibbstown, was seriously injured and transported to Cooper University Hospital for treatment.

The other vehicle involved in the crash was driven by a 27-year-old woman from Deptford, who also sustained injuries and was taken to Jefferson Hospital for medical attention.

Sophia Bennett, a sophomore at Washington Township High School, was not just a student but also an active participant in school activities. She was a member of the school’s swim team and played softball, showcasing her talent and dedication to sports. Her warmth, kindness, and spirit had a profound impact on those around her, as noted by district Superintendent Eric Hibbs and Principal Raymond Anderson in a joint statement.

Adding to the tragedy is the fact that Bennett’s mother, Mary Bennett, works as an assistant at Whitman Elementary School within the district. The school community is devastated by the loss of such a bright and promising young individual.

In response to the heartbreaking news, fundraisers have been set up to support the Bennett family during this difficult time. A GoFundMe campaign organised by a family friend exceeded its $10,000 goal, while another fundraiser on Meal Train raised over $1,250. The outpouring of support and memories shared on social media highlight the impact Sophia had on those around her.

Washington Township Mayor Laurie Burns also expressed her condolences, acknowledging the unimaginable sorrow of losing a young life and urging the community to come together to mourn, support one another, and honour Sophia’s memory.

As the community grieves this devastating loss, the school district has partnered with Care Solace to provide mental health services for students, staff, and their families. This initiative aims to offer support and resources to those affected by the tragic event.

The passing of Sophia Bennett serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of coming together in times of sorrow.
