Background of the Accused

Yahya Khan, a native of Vizhinjam, was known in the community for his work as a door-to-door pot seller. His seemingly innocuous occupation provided him with an opportunity to gain access to homes, including the one where the mentally challenged girl resided. In 2008, he took advantage of the vulnerable girl’s situation and committed the heinous crime of rape.

Initial Detention and Escape

Following the incident, the Pala police managed to detain Yahya Khan. However, he was able to secure bail from the court and subsequently fled, evading justice for years. Despite initial efforts to apprehend him, Khan remained at large, hiding in various locations across Kerala.

International Manhunt

Realizing the gravity of the case, a special investigation team was formed under the leadership of the district police chief. Their relentless pursuit led them to discover that Khan had fled the country and was residing in Sharjah. District police chief K. Karthick pursued the matter with Interpol, officially declaring Khan an international criminal in January 2024.

Arrest and Extradition

With the assistance of Interpol, Khan was finally apprehended in Sharjah and brought back to India to face justice. He was flown to Kochi and remanded to judicial custody upon his arrival. The successful operation was a result of the collaborative efforts of Pala Deputy Police Superintendent Sadan K., Pala Station sub-inspector Binu V. L., and SI Biju Kumar, who served as the Interpol Liaison Officer.
