State police Crack Down on Reckless Driving
Connecticut State Police have ramped up their efforts to tackle reckless driving on the state’s highways, aiming to reduce crashes and fatalities. The initiative was launched last month following Governor Ned Lamont’s announcement that state police would be taking a strong stand against dangerous driving practices. Rick Green, the Director of Communications for the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, highlighted the importance of sending a clear message that reckless driving is not only illegal but also poses a serious risk to road users.

Sharp Increase in Traffic Stops and Infractions
In the first part of March, state police reported a significant uptick in traffic stops and infractions. Between March 12 and March 18, troopers made a total of 2,669 traffic stops, resulting in 1,369 infractions. The majority of these infractions were related to speeding, indicating a prevalent issue on Connecticut’s roads. Rick Green noted that this represented a substantial increase compared to the previous two weeks, with over 1,100 more traffic stops and nearly 650 more infractions.
Concerns Over Road Safety
The rise in enforcement comes amidst growing concerns about road safety and speeding motorists, particularly following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Data from the Department of Transportation revealed a concerning trend in traffic fatalities, with 303 reported in 2021, 366 in 2022, and 322 in 2023. So far in 2024, 53 fatalities have been recorded on Connecticut roads, including three tragic wrong-way crashes claiming seven lives.
Targeted Enforcement on High-Risk Roads
To address the concerning statistics, state police have intensified their enforcement efforts on roads known for higher rates of fatal accidents. Route 15, Interstate 95, and Interstate 91, as well as various rural roads, have been a focus of expanded enforcement. Additional enforcement is planned for I-91 in the Hartford area and later along I-84 between Danbury and Waterbury. Since the implementation of targeted enforcement measures, there have been no fatal or serious injury collisions in the primary enforcement areas.

DESPP Commissioner Ronnell A. Higgins expressed confidence in the effectiveness of targeted enforcement, noting that police presence and enforcement actions have had a positive impact on road safety. Col. Daniel Loughman, commanding officer of the Connecticut State Police, emphasized the dedication of troopers to maintaining safety on the state’s highways. Utilizing a data-driven approach, state police continue to identify areas for targeted enforcement to deter aggressive and distracted driving practices.

Col. Loughman reiterated the importance of motorists adhering to traffic laws and driving responsibly to create safer road conditions for all. With troopers maintaining a 24/7 presence to deter dangerous driving behaviours, he urged all drivers to follow the rules of the road and avoid aggressive or distracted driving. The state police’s ongoing efforts aim to reduce the number of crashes and fatalities on Connecticut’s highways, fostering a safer environment for all road users..
