Four Youngsters Booked for the Attack

The police have registered a case against four individuals identified as Ram Tarpude, Karun Wakode, Vaibhav Dighe, and Ganesh Kakade, along with their associates. They have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 324, 323, 504, 506, 143, 147, and 149.

Details of the Incident

Assistant police inspector Sambhaji Gurav, who is leading the investigation, revealed that Funde is a student in the Philosophy department at SPPU and is affiliated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). On the other hand, the accused individuals have connections with the Yuva Sena of the Shiv Sena.

WhatsApp Group Conflict

Funde is a member of a WhatsApp group called ‘SPPU Boys Hostel’ which consists of numerous current and former students. The FIR stated that the group’s admin had prohibited the posting of any political content.

Provocation and Attack

According to the FIR, Tarpude posted a political message about Ravindra Dhangekar’s nomination by the Congress for the Lok Sabha elections in Pune. Funde promptly deleted the post, citing the group’s rules. This action led to Tarpude summoning Funde to the Adarsh Canteen at SPPU.

Physical Assault

Upon meeting at the canteen, Tarpude confronted Funde about the deleted post. Funde reiterated the group’s policy on political content, which enraged Tarpude. Subsequently, Tarpude and his associates allegedly assaulted Funde, causing injuries by hitting him with plastic chairs.

Police Intervention

Following the attack, the police were informed and promptly arrived at the scene to conduct an investigation. Inspector Gurav mentioned that the accused individuals have been served notices in accordance with the law, and the investigation is ongoing.

With tensions rising over a simple act of deleting a post, the incident at SPPU has sparked concerns about the safety and freedom of expression on campus. The clash between political affiliations has once again brought attention to the need for peaceful dialogue and respect for differing opinions within academic institutions. As the investigation progresses, the authorities are expected to ensure justice for Anil Funde and uphold the principles of a harmonious educational environment..
