According to Crump, text messages received by two women suggest that the warden may have been involved in the incident that led to Stevenson’s death.
Details of the Incident
Stevenson tragically passed away at an Alexandria hospital on Nov. 6, just two days after he was beaten in the jail. In a shocking turn of events, inmate John Contrell Williams, along with correctional deputies Byron Oneal White and Frank Clinton Overbey III, were arrested and fired in connection with the case. Williams faces a charge of second-degree murder, while White and Overbey face charges of malfeasance in office and being a principal to second-degree murder, respectively.
The Text Messages
At the press conference, Crump presented two women who had received text messages related to the incident. One of the women, Stevenson’s fiancée Liddie Ballard, shared a message in which she inquired about the warden’s involvement in pulling Stevenson out of his cell. The response she received indicated that the warden had threatened to harm Stevenson after viewing surveillance footage of the incident.
Further Allegations
Another woman, Charlotte Guillot, disclosed a text message from her nephew, an employee at the jail, which referenced Stevenson hitting a corrections officer. The message, allegedly from someone identified as “Boss,” indicated that an officer would be sent to arrest Stevenson. Guillot also shared a text exchange with someone identified as Bruce Cazelot, the warden of the Avoyelles Parish Detention Center #1, in which Cazelot appeared to boast about his actions following the incident.

Crump revealed that Stevenson’s autopsy determined his death to be a homicide caused by blunt force trauma.
