The Outbreak of Salmonella Infections Linked to Geckos in Ontario
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has reported 18 confirmed cases of salmonella infections in Ontario, all linked to exposure to geckos. This outbreak of “Salmonella lome” illness has affected a total of 35 individuals across seven provinces, with Ontario and Quebec being the most heavily impacted.

Investigation Findings and Impact
According to PHAC, individuals who fell ill reported direct or indirect contact with geckos or their environments before experiencing symptoms. The cases in Ontario date back to March 2020, with five individuals requiring hospitalization. Fortunately, there have been no reported deaths related to the outbreak, but the impact on those affected, especially children under five years old, has been significant.
Identification of the Outbreak Strain
Through whole genome sequencing, PHAC determined that some cases of salmonella dating back to 2020 were caused by the same outbreak strain as those in 2024. This discovery underscores the importance of swift and accurate identification of the source of the outbreak to prevent further spread of the illness.
Preventative Measures and Public Health Notice
PHAC stressed the role that reptile owners and business operators play in preventing new illnesses linked to pets like geckos. The agency highlighted the natural presence of salmonella in reptiles’ intestinal tracts and the potential for transmission through droppings and contaminated surfaces. Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and abdominal cramps, with severe cases requiring hospitalization.
Connection to Other Outbreaks
In a related public health notice, PHAC also addressed a salmonella outbreak linked to snakes and feeder rodents, with 70 confirmed cases reported as of March 19. This serves as a reminder of the presence of salmonella in various animal species and the need for caution when handling reptiles and their environments.

Preventative Tips from PHAC
To prevent the spread of salmonella, PHAC provided a list of tips for handling reptiles, including washing hands after contact, avoiding kissing pet reptiles, and supervising children’s interactions with these animals. It also advised against keeping reptiles in homes with young children and recommended thorough cleaning and sanitation of reptile enclosures and accessories.
