Authorities in Boise, Idaho confirmed on Thursday that both Skylar Meade, an inmate who escaped custody, and his accomplice, Nicholas Umphenour, are now in police custody. The search for Meade and Umphenour began after Meade was taken to a hospital in Boise for medical treatment on Tuesday night. As they were preparing to leave the hospital early on Wednesday morning, the two officers accompanying Meade were ambushed by Umphenour, who shot them. One officer remains in critical but stable condition, while the other has serious injuries that are not life-threatening. A third IDOC employee was also injured during the incident.

Meade and Umphenour managed to escape in a grey 2020 Honda Civic before police arrived at the scene. It was later revealed that Umphenour is an associate of Meade, but details of their relationship were not disclosed. Meade, a member of the Aryan Knights prison gang, has distinctive tattoos on his face and is described as 5-foot-6 and 150 pounds. Umphenour is 5-foot-11, 160 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes.

Police warned the public not to approach Meade and Umphenour if spotted, as they are considered dangerous and armed. Authorities are investigating their possible involvement in two homicides in Clearwater County and Nez Perce County. The victims in these cases were identified only as men, and police found shackles at one of the crime scenes.

Meade had been serving time in a maximum-security prison since 2016 for aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. His prison term was set to end in October 2036, and he was housed in administrative segregation due to his behavior. The attack at the hospital was described as a planned endeavor to free Meade from custody, with Police Chief Ron Winegar calling it a coordinated and brazen act.

The incident at Saint Alphonsus Medical Center was traumatic for both staff and patients receiving care at the time. Winegar emphasized that the attack was not aimed at the hospital but happened there because that’s where Meade was being treated. Authorities are urging anyone with information on the case to contact Ada County Dispatch.

The details of how the attack was planned and who else may have been involved are still under investigation. The public is advised to remain vigilant and report any sightings of Meade and Umphenour to the authorities. The swift action of law enforcement in capturing the fugitives has brought some relief to the community after a tense manhunt that gripped the region..
