The Tragic Murder of Prakash Rajput: A Case of Mistaken Identity
In a horrifying turn of events, a 14-year-old boy named Prakash Rajput was brutally hacked to death with machetes by two fellow students from his school while he was peacefully asleep near Pune. The incident took place at an outhouse in Anandvan Society in Manerwadi, located 20 kilometres from Pune city.

A Family Torn Apart
Prakash Rajput resided in the bungalow with his family, who had been caretakers of the property for the past 11 years. He lived with his mother, Anita, and elder brother, Prateek, who is a Class 10 student at a school in the nearby Khanapur village. Prakash, a Class 9 student, had tragically lost his father in 2020.
On the fateful day of the attack, Prateek returned home from an exam to discover his younger brother lying in a pool of blood on the lawn of the bungalow. Anita, who had been away working as a daily wage labourer in Panshet, rushed home upon receiving the devastating news and immediately contacted the police.
The Brutal Attack
Prakash had sustained severe injuries to the back of his head, neck, and back, inflicted by sharp weapons. Multiple investigative teams were deployed to work on the case after a First Information Report (FIR) was registered at Haveli police station. The local crime branch of Pune Rural police also joined the probe to unravel the shocking crime.
According to Inspector Sachin Wangde, in-charge of Haveli police station, the assailants, aged 16 and 17, had mistakenly targeted Prakash instead of his elder brother. The motive behind the attack stemmed from an enmity related to a romantic relationship gone sour, where the suspects believed Prateek was responsible for the failed love affair of one of them.

A Tragic Misunderstanding
The suspects had planned to confront Prateek but mistook Prakash for him as he lay sleeping with his face down. When Prakash woke up screaming after the initial blow, the attackers realized their mistake but decided to silence him to protect their identities. Subsequent blows were struck with the intent to kill Prakash, leading to his untimely demise.
The two suspects were apprehended and presented before the Juvenile Justice Board as part of the legal proceedings. The investigation into the senseless murder continues as the community grapples with the shock and grief of losing a young life in such a brutal manner.
