In a heartbreaking turn of events, two individuals lost their lives due to lightning strikes in separate incidents in Odisha. The first incident took place in Bhograi block of Balasore district, where a 23-year-old engineering student, Ranjan Kumar Paamanik, tragically passed away. Ranjan and his father were at their shrimp farm when it started raining. While his father returned home, Ranjan sought shelter under a thatched house. Unfortunately, a lightning bolt struck the structure, causing it to catch fire with Ranjan trapped inside.

Local farmers rushed to the scene and attempted to extinguish the flames, but it was too late. Ranjan sustained fatal burn injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Jaleswarpur community health centre. The police arrived at the hospital, conducted an autopsy, and filed a case of unnatural death. Ranjan, who was the only son of his parents, leaves behind a grieving family and community.

Meanwhile, in Thakurmunda block of Mayurbhanj district, another tragedy unfolded as a 44-year-old man, Baidhar Sasad, fell victim to a lightning strike at his residence in Manik Sahi village. The harrowing incident occurred as Baidhar’s wife was retrieving clothes from the drying line outside their home during a rainstorm. Startled by the loud thunder, she screamed in fear, prompting Baidhar to rush to her aid. Tragically, he was struck by lightning and succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
Upon receiving the distressing news, the police rushed to the scene, collected the body, and initiated the necessary procedures for an autopsy. A case of unnatural death was registered, and authorities assured that ex gratia would be provided to the victims’ families following the completion of official formalities. The sudden loss of Baidhar has left his loved ones and the community in mourning.
