The peaceful community of Mpakawero Zone in Bombo Town Council was shaken to its core on Monday morning by a horrifying incident. A single mother, who made a living as a tomato vendor, allegedly committed a heinous act by beheading her own 12-year-old daughter, Lina Kawonawo. The young girl, a bright Primary Six pupil at Bombo Common Primary School, met a tragic end in their one-bedroom rented house.

The Unfolding of the Tragedy

Witnesses recount a harrowing scene where the mother locked her daughter inside the house at the early hour of 6.45am before committing the gruesome act. Despite desperate attempts by neighbours to rescue the girl, the door remained locked. The mother was heard using a panga and a hoe to brutally attack her helpless daughter in the presence of her two other siblings, who were luckily saved from harm.

Neighbour’s Account

Mr Deo Matovu, a neighbour who rushed to help, described the chilling moment when he heard the girl’s cries for help upon his return from dropping off his own children at school. Despite his efforts to persuade the mother to open the door, she refused, insisting on waiting for the police. The community’s collective attempts to save the girl were in vain, as they arrived too late to prevent the tragic outcome.

Rescue Efforts

Once the door was finally breached, the rescuers were met with a heart-wrenching sight of the mother holding her daughter’s decapitated head. The neighbourhood was left in shock as any hope of saving the young girl vanished along with her cries for help. The scene was further marred by the mother’s callousness towards her other children, instructing them to stop crying amidst the chaos.

Community Response

The chairperson of Mpakawero Zone, Mr James Mulambuzi, narrated the horror of discovering the lifeless body of the young girl drenched in blood. The quick intervention of the police prevented the suspect from facing the wrath of enraged residents, who were understandably incensed by the brutal act. The two younger siblings of the deceased, visibly shaken by the ordeal, were swiftly taken into police custody for their safety.

Police Investigation

The Savannah Region Police Spokesperson, Mr Sam Twineamazima, confirmed that a team of detectives had been dispatched to the scene. The suspect, now in police custody, was found in possession of blood-stained weapons believed to have been used in the crime.
