In a tragic turn of events, a volunteer search group from New Castle made a heartbreaking discovery along Interstate 80 in Shenango Township. The body of Devin M. Habib, 37, who had been reported missing on March 8, was found by the group four nights later. Mercer County Coroner John Libonati confirmed the man’s identity, revealing that Habib had family ties in New Castle.

Efforts of the Walkers Volunteer Search Party
Marcia Black and her husband, Chris Black, who lead the Walkers Volunteer Search Party, received information about Habib’s disappearance from his family. The group took immediate action and began searching for him in the area where he was last seen. It was during this search that they came across Habib’s body lying in the grassy median strip between the eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway.
Surprising Discovery and Response
The Blacks were driving along I-80 between 5:30 and 6 p.m. when they spotted Habib. Despite the busy highway with trucks speeding by, Chris Black bravely crossed the lanes to investigate. They were shocked to find Habib carrying a white basket, which was found at the scene. A poster on the search group’s Facebook page had indicated that Habib was last seen near the Pennsylvania-Ohio line on Friday evening.
Investigation and Closure of the Highway
State police from the Mercer barracks and the Mercer County coroner are currently investigating Habib’s death. It is believed that he was struck by a westbound vehicle and suffered fatal injuries early Saturday. The highway was closed for several hours for police activity and reopened around 11 p.m. that night.
Family’s Efforts to Honour Devin Habib
Habib leaves behind four children, and his brother, Joshua, has set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses. As Habib did not have life insurance, any donations received in excess of the funeral costs will be divided among his children. Habib had attended the Lawrence County Career and Technical Center, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him.
