In a horrifying turn of events, a tribal couple in Odisha’s Kandhamal district met a tragic end at the hands of their own villagers who suspected them of practising black magic. The couple, identified as Batasi Kanhar and Tahira Kanhar, were brutally hacked to death in Gadapadar village on March 8.

Initially, there were speculations that Maoists were behind the gruesome murders. However, thorough investigation by the police led to the shocking revelation that it was actually the villagers who orchestrated the heinous crime. The bodies of Batasi and Tahira were discovered the following day in a forested area, drenched in blood with severe head injuries. The manner in which they were killed, with hard objects striking the middle of their heads, indicated a barbaric act that was not typical of Maoist killings.

The villagers suspected the couple of practising witchcraft after a number of locals fell ill. Batasi and Tahira, who were known for their religious inclinations and regular puja ceremonies at their home, were accused of sorcery and subsequently expelled from the village. They had moved to an area outside the village in an attempt to escape the accusations.

A chilling revelation emerged during the investigation as it was revealed that a village committee had conspired to kill the couple. The principal accused, Sunil Digal, was hired for ₹40,000 to carry out the gruesome act. Sunil confessed to the police that he, along with around 10 others, mercilessly murdered Batasi and then her husband Tahira.

The deceased Tahira was a former ward member of Salaguda Gram Panchayat, adding a layer of tragedy to the already heart-wrenching incident.
