In a recent move towards transparency, the Bakersfield police Department has released body-cam footage of an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a man back in January. The incident took place at around 2:20 a.m on Jan. 18 on Chester Avenue near 13th Street. Officers had received a ShotSpotter alert in the area, leading them to a pickup truck where they found the suspect, identified as Alejandro Avalaos, also known as Esmeraldo Martinez Vivanco, in possession of a scoped rifle.

The video footage captured the tense moments as officers approached the vehicle, instructing the man to exit the car. However, the situation escalated when Avalos was seen with a rifle, prompting the officers to back up. As they formulated a plan, Avalos fired his weapon at the officers, initiating the exchange of gunfire.
Officer Response
Seven officers, including Officer Ward, Officer Maduena, Officer Garcia, Officer Flores, Officer Baker, Senior Officer Jordan, and Sergeant Cason, responded to the threat by discharging their firearms. Despite the initial exchange of gunfire, Avalos continued to move within the vehicle, leading to further shots being fired.
Outcome of the Incident
Tragically, Avalos succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while fortunately, no officers or bystanders were harmed in the incident. This marks the third officer-involved shooting in 2024, following a total of 10 such incidents in 2023.

In light of the shooting, all officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into the use of force. BPD Police Chief Greg Terry emphasized the department’s commitment to accountability and professionalism through the release of the body-cam footage.
