Born in Moquah, WI, Gary was the son of the late John and Mary Mihalek. He was a proud graduate of Moquah High School, where he excelled academically and athletically. After high school, Gary went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a degree in Business Administration.

Gary had a successful career as a business owner, owning and operating a popular local restaurant in Fort Madison for many years.
