The trial is set to begin today for Mylik Hill, who is facing ten counts, including attempted murder and resisting law enforcement, in connection with the shooting of Officer Thomas “Tommy” Mangan of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) in 2022.

The incident took place on February 27, 2022, in the Fountain Square area. Officer Mangan suffered significant injuries to his throat and voice box, requiring multiple surgeries. He was in his first year with IMPD when the shooting occurred.

Officer Mangan was among six officers who responded to a report of a crash in the 1600 block of Lexington Avenue just after 10 p.m. A caller stated that a car had hit her fence and her neighbor’s truck before the driver got out of the vehicle, urinated, and then headed south on S. State Street.

Officers located a car and driver matching the description in the 1600 block of Woodlawn Avenue. When they approached with their lights on, the driver, later identified as Mylik Hill, fled the scene. Officer Mangan and the other officers gave chase.

One of the shots also struck his radio, which later caught fire and exploded. Hill continued to fire more shots, prompting another officer to return fire.

Despite being injured, Hill managed to evade the police. However, with the help of a drone and other agencies, officers eventually located him in a back yard around 11 p.m. Hill had sustained gunshot wounds to the chest and thigh.

Representing himself in the trial, Hill is expected to face a few days of court proceedings.
