The Shooter at Texas Megachurch Identified as Genesse Ivonne Moreno
In a shocking incident that unfolded at Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, on Sunday, a shooter opened fire before being killed by security officers. The shooter has been identified as Genesse Ivonne Moreno, a 36-year-old individual with a history of mental illness. Moreno used an AR-style rifle in the attack, which also critically injured their 7-year-old son.
During a news conference, Houston police Commander Chris Hassig revealed that Moreno sometimes used both male and female aliases. However, investigators determined through interviews and past police reports that Moreno identified as female. Hassig and others confirmed that Moreno had a history of mental illness and had been placed under emergency detention in 2016. However, no additional details were provided.
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner stated that it is still too early to establish a motive for the shooting. However, officials are looking into a dispute involving Moreno and the family of Moreno’s ex-husband. Additionally, investigators discovered antisemitic writings by the shooter.
Describing Moreno as a “lone wolf,” Hassig mentioned that Moreno’s rifle had a “Palestine” sticker on the buttstock. He emphasized that Moreno was not acting as part of a larger group.
Following the incident, police conducted a search at Moreno’s residence in Conroe, located approximately 40 miles north of Houston.
According to investigators, Moreno and the 7-year-old boy entered the church building at 1:55 p.m. after Moreno pointed a gun at an unarmed security guard. Once inside, Moreno began firing, prompting the guards inside the building, off-duty Houston police officer Christopher Moreno and Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission Agent Adrian Herrera, to return fire and ultimately kill Genesse Moreno.
The entire exchange of gunfire took place in a church hallway, and none of the violence spilled into the main sanctuary. Hassig described the confrontation as a “gun battle” that lasted several minutes. TABC Chairman Kevin Lilly commended the bravery of the guards, stating that they acted as a barrier between worshippers and terror.
While both officers discharged their weapons, it is unclear at this time if Moreno’s son was accidentally shot by one of them. The 7-year-old boy remains in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head.
The shooting at Lakewood Church has sent shockwaves through the community. The church, which regularly welcomes 45,000 people weekly, is the third-largest megachurch in the U.S. according to the Hartford Institute for Religion Research.
