Authorities are responding to a shocking shooting incident that took place at Lakewood Church in Houston on February 11, 2024. According to police reports, a woman, who had used male aliases, opened fire at the church, injuring two individuals. However, swift action from two off-duty police officers led to the suspect being fatally shot before further harm could be inflicted.

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, but police have confirmed that the shooter’s gun bore the word “Palestine.” They have also discovered court documents where the suspect identified themselves as Jeffrey. This has led to discussions about the possibility of the suspect having a transgender identity, although Houston police have referred to the suspect as “they” to address the sensitivity surrounding the subject of gender.

In a news conference held the following day, Houston Police Department’s homicide unit commander, Christopher Hassig, provided further details about the shooter. He identified her as Genesse Moreno, a 36-year-old Hispanic female who had used multiple aliases, including Jeffrey Escalante. Hassig emphasized that despite the suspect’s use of male and female names, she had consistently been identified as female throughout the investigation.

During the search of the shooter’s belongings, police also discovered writings that were described as “antisemitic.” However, it is yet to be clarified whether the shooter’s body had been identified as biologically female. Police have not responded to queries about whether she had testosterone in her system at the time of death.

The incident marks a rare occurrence, as mass shootings are predominantly carried out by males. According to research conducted by the Justice Department in February 2022, 97.7% of mass shooters in the US have been male. However, there have been a few instances where females have been responsible for such acts of violence.

Joel Osteen, the renowned Christian preacher who leads Lakewood Church, often faces criticism for promoting a “prosperity gospel” that emphasizes God’s desire for Christians to be healthy and wealthy. The shooting incident has raised questions about the motive behind the attack and the possible connection to Osteen’s teachings.

As authorities continue their investigation into this shocking incident, the focus remains on understanding the circumstances that led to this act of violence and ensuring the safety and well-being of the injured individuals..
