Brown Family Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Jackson State University

The grieving parents of Flynn Brown, a 22-year-old Jackson State University student who was tragically killed on campus in December 2022, have taken legal action against the university. Michele Hill-Brown and Michael Brown have filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of their son, claiming that the negligence of Jackson State employees led to their son’s untimely demise.

On the fateful day of December 2, 2022, Flynn Brown was discovered lifeless inside a parked vehicle on the JSU campus. He had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The suspect, 20-year-old Randall Smith, was later arrested and charged with murder. Shockingly, the altercation that led to Brown’s death was over something as trivial as doughnuts.

According to the lawsuit, the Browns argue that Jackson State employees failed to prioritize their son’s safety in previous incidents, ultimately resulting in his tragic death. In August and September 2022, Brown and his two suitemates reported several thefts of their belongings to university employees, suspecting Smith to be the culprit. However, the university allegedly neglected to conduct an investigation into Smith’s behavior.

The lawsuit further reveals that in October 2022, Brown reported the theft of his iPad and other personal items from his dorm room to campus police, once again suspecting Smith. The university, however, took no action in response to Brown’s concerns for his safety.

Despite the ongoing issues with Smith, he continued to reside in the same dorm as Brown and his suitemates. The lawsuit claims that Brown eventually confronted Smith about the stolen iPad, leading to Smith’s confession. Disturbingly, the lawsuit alleges that Smith then obtained a firearm with the intention of killing Brown.

Finally, on December 2, Smith carried out his plan, fatally shooting Brown. The lawsuit seeks financial compensation from Jackson State University for the devastating loss suffered by the Brown family.

When approached for comment, Jackson State University officials declined, citing the pending litigation. The grieving family hopes that their lawsuit will not only bring justice for their son but also highlight the importance of student safety on university campuses..
