A Tragic Custody Exchange Turns Fatal as Father is Shot in Colorado

A child custody exchange took a horrific turn in Colorado on Sunday when a man was fatally shot during a fight. The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office responded to a distress call at a gas station in unincorporated Elbert County, southeast of Denver, at approximately 3 p.m. Reports indicated that two men were engaged in a physical altercation, which escalated when one of them brandished a gun and shot the other in the chest.

The victim, a 36-year-old father from Parker, Colorado, had arrived at the gas station to meet his ex-girlfriend for the custody exchange of their 4-year-old daughter. Tragically, it was during this encounter that the father’s life was abruptly taken. At present, the identity of the deceased has not been disclosed.

Law enforcement officials have confirmed that the shooter is Jeffrey Church, the fiancé of the father’s ex-girlfriend. Church, 26, was promptly arrested and is now facing first-degree murder charges. He remains in custody at the detention facility of the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office.

The first deputy to arrive at the scene managed to apprehend Church, holding him until additional deputies arrived. The deputy then administered life-saving measures to the father, who was gravely injured. Subsequently, Elizabeth Fire Rescue personnel took over the efforts to save his life. Despite their valiant attempts, the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at AdventHealth Parker.

As the investigation into this tragic incident continues, authorities have refrained from disclosing any additional information. The circumstances leading up to the fight and subsequent shooting remain under scrutiny.
