Migrant Dies from Electrocution on Top of Stationary Train in Paris

A tragic incident occurred at the Gare du Nord station in Paris, where a man identified as a migrant lost his life after being electrocuted on top of a stationary Eurostar train. The train was scheduled to travel to London via the Channel Tunnel.

According to a police source in Paris, the migrant met his untimely demise on Thursday after climbing onto the roof of the train. It is believed that he suffered an electric shock when he came into contact with a live wire. Security camera footage later confirmed that the man had crossed over tracks from another platform before the incident occurred.

Despite efforts to identify the migrant, police stated that the condition of his body following the electric shock made it difficult to obtain precise information about his identity. Tragically, witnesses reported that his body burst into flames upon contact with the live wire.

The incident caused some disruption to the scheduled service of the Eurostar trains, although there were no other injuries reported. Prosecutors in Paris have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death, with border police at the Gare du Nord station leading the inquiry.

This unfortunate incident highlights the continued efforts of migrants to seek irregular routes to reach the UK. Last week, Britain announced plans to intensify its efforts in preventing irregular crossings by migrants from France.

While cases of stowaways on trains are rare, they have occurred in the past, particularly near the town of Calais, where high-speed trains enter the Channel Tunnel. However, most migrants attempting to reach the UK choose to depart from the northern French coast on small boats or opt for longer journeys from Belgium.

The Eurostar train, which connects London’s St. Pancras station with Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam, has recently expanded its network with French high-speed operator Thalys. Nevertheless, stowaway journeys remain among the most dangerous irregular crossing routes, regardless of the mode of transport.

Sadly, migrant deaths during such journeys are not uncommon. In addition to accidents involving trains, migrants have suffocated inside trucks or attempted to hide in the landing gear of airplanes, often resulting in fatal consequences.

This incident at Gare du Nord is not the first of its kind. In 2017, another migrant lost his life while attempting to climb on top of a Eurostar train, and in 2015, an Egyptian teenager survived a similar incident but sustained life-threatening injuries.

Despite efforts to enhance security at the central train station in Paris, such tragic incidents continue to occur. The investigation into this latest incident will hopefully shed light on the circumstances surrounding the migrant’s death and contribute to preventing similar occurrences in the future.
