Shooting Incident at Lakewood Church Leaves Two Injured: Suspect Shot and killed
Houston, Texas – In a shocking incident on Sunday, February 11, 2024, a shooting at the Lakewood Church has left two individuals injured. The victims include a child and a 57-year-old man. The suspect, identified as a 35-year-old woman, was shot and killed at the scene.
According to Houston police Chief Troy Finner, the incident occurred in the afternoon when the woman entered the Lakewood Church at 1:53 PM local time. Cameras inside the church captured her entrance. Chief Finner addressed the media, stating, “Both officers engaged, striking the female. She’s deceased here on the scene. Unfortunately, a 5-year-old child was hit and is in critical condition at our local hospital. She had a long gun, and it could’ve been a lot worse.”
The Lakewood Church, founded by John Osteen and his second wife, Dolores, on May 10, 1959, is a Christian megachurch located in Houston. After John Osteen’s passing on January 23, 1999, his youngest son, Joel Osteen, took over as the pastor.

Reacting to the incident, Joel Osteen released a statement expressing relief that the shooting occurred during a service, as it potentially prevented further damage and casualties. Osteen said, “I can only imagine if it would have happened during the 11 o’clock service. So, you know, if there’s anything good of it… it’s that she didn’t get in there and do a whole lot worse damage.”
Osteen emphasized that the Lakewood Church would continue to move forward, stating, “We’re going to keep going strong and just, you know, doing what God’s called us to do, lift people up and give hope to the world again.”
While the motive behind the shooting remains unknown, the police are actively investigating the incident to gather more information.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott condemned the act, expressing solidarity with the Lakewood Church community. He stated, “Our hearts are with those impacted by today’s tragic shooting and the entire Lakewood Church community in Houston. Places of worship are sacred. I have been in contact with local and state officials to help this community and bring swift justice to the criminal who committed this heinous act.”
