Although all three individuals ate a variety of breakfast foods at the Bellevue IHOP, the specific food item responsible for the outbreak has not been identified. Public Health conducted interviews with the affected individuals, revealing that all three had dined at the Bellevue IHOP. The victims, ranging in age from 20 to 70, experienced symptoms consistent with salmonellosis, such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, bloody stool, and fever. No ill employees were found at the restaurant.

Investigation and Measures Taken

On January 11, 2024, Environmental Health Investigators requested source information and food receipts from the IHOP restaurant. Subsequently, on January 16, 2024, investigators visited the establishment to review its food preparation processes. However, no contributing factors to the outbreak were identified during the investigation. As a precautionary measure, the restaurant has undergone a thorough deep cleaning and reinforced food safety training with its staff.

Lab testing confirmed that all three cases were indeed Salmonella infections. Further genetic fingerprinting analysis, conducted at the Washington State Public Health Laboratory, revealed that the individuals were infected with the same strain of Salmonella.
