American Woman and Belizean Man killed in Drug Dealer Dispute at Tulum Beach Club

An American woman from Los Angeles and a man from Belize were tragically killed during a dispute between drug dealers at a beach club in the Mexican resort city of Tulum. The incident, which occurred on Friday night, has left authorities investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Officials have confirmed that the American woman, identified as 44-year-old Niko Honarbakhsh, had no connection to the alleged drug dealer who was also killed in the incident. It appears that Honarbakhsh was caught in the crossfire and became an innocent victim of the violent dispute.

Sources have revealed that Honarbakhsh had been living in Cancun at the time of her death. Prosecutors have refuted claims in local media suggesting that Honarbakhsh and the Belizean man were a couple, as a photograph of the man showed him with a completely different woman.

Tulum, located south of Cancun and Playa del Carmen, is known for its beautiful beaches and has become a popular tourist destination. However, incidents like this serve as a reminder of the dangers that can lurk in such areas, particularly when drug-related disputes escalate into violence.

Authorities have disclosed that the Belizean man had cocaine and pills in his possession, indicating his involvement in drug dealing. They are currently seeking the suspects involved in the shootings.

This is not the first time that foreign tourists have fallen victim to drug-related violence in Tulum. In 2021, two tourists, including a California travel blogger born in India and a German national, were killed while dining at a restaurant. They were unfortunate casualties of a gunfight between rival drug dealers.

In light of these incidents, the U.S. State Department has issued a travel alert urging visitors to exercise increased situational awareness, especially after dark, in Mexico’s Caribbean beach resorts, including Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.
