Los Angeles Woman Killed in Crossfire Between Drug Gangs in Tulum Beach Club

A Los Angeles woman, identified as Niko Honarbakhsh, was tragically killed in crossfire between two drug gangs at a beach club in Tulum, Mexico. The incident occurred on Friday just after 6:30 pm. Another man, known as ‘Belize,’ also lost his life during the shooting. Prosecutors in Quintana Roo emphasized that Honarbakhsh had no connection to the drug deal.

Honarbakhsh, 44, who was originally from California but living in Cancun, was enjoying the sunset alone at the beach club with her dogs when she was caught in the crossfire, according to witnesses. She was just about to get up and pay when the shooting began. Onlookers described her as looking “so happy” with her pets, who had been “chilling out on the sand” all day.

The shooting took place at the Mia Beach Club in the Tulum Hotel Zone, a popular tourist strip known for its upscale clubs and eateries. Witnesses initially mistook the gunshots for fireworks, and the chaotic incident unfolded quickly, leaving little time for reaction. Authorities denied reports that Honarbakhsh and Belize were a couple, stating that a photo of Belize showed him with a completely different woman.

Belize was believed to be a drug dealer and had cocaine and pills in his possession at the time of his death. The suspects in the shootings have been identified, and authorities are actively searching for them. The State Attorney General’s Office emphasized that Honarbakhsh had no connection to Belize or the drug-related crimes he was involved in.

The fatal shooting has shocked holidaymakers, with some expressing their distress on TripAdvisor. One tourist described witnessing the incident and expressed concern about the safety of Tulum. Another witness confirmed the events and criticized the lack of immediate action from beach club staff.

Tulum has seen previous incidents of violence involving drug gangs, resulting in the deaths of foreign tourists. In 2021, a California travel blogger and a German tourist were killed in a restaurant during a gunfight between rival drug dealers. The U.S. State Department has issued travel alerts for the area, urging visitors to exercise increased situational awareness, especially after dark.

The Mia Beach Club, where the shooting took place, has not commented on the incident. Authorities are working diligently to address the issue of drug-related violence in the region and ensure the safety of both locals and tourists.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of Niko Honarbakhsh during this tragic time..
