American Woman killed in Drug-Related Shootout at Mexican Beach Resort

In a tragic incident at a popular Mexican beach resort in Tulum, an American woman lost her life in the crossfire of an apparent drug deal gone wrong. The incident, which took place on February 9, has sparked an investigation by the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office.
According to ABC News, the deceased woman has been identified as 44-year-old Niko Honarbakhsh, a native of Los Angeles. The investigation revealed that Honarbakhsh was not the intended target but was unfortunately caught in the crossfire. Autopsies will be conducted on both bodies as part of the ongoing investigation.
The alleged drug dealer involved in the shootout was from Belize and was found to be in possession of cocaine, transparent bags containing red and orange pills, and bags of brown granulated powder. This led the prosecutor’s office to conclude that he was likely a drug dealer and part of a gang. However, local reports suggesting a relationship between Honarbakhsh and the deceased drug dealer have been dismissed as inaccurate.
This is not the first time that tourists have been caught in gang-related violence in Tulum. In 2021, a California travel blogger and a German tourist were killed in a restaurant when rival drug dealers began shooting at each other. The area has seen an increase in such incidents in recent years.

Tulum, located south of Cancun and near the border with Belize, is a popular resort destination for Americans. However, the U.S. government has issued “Do Not Travel” warnings for certain parts of Mexico due to gang violence and the risk of using synthetic drugs or adulterated prescription pills.
The Mexican authorities are actively pursuing leads and have identified suspects in connection with the shootout. However, no names have been released at this time.
The U.S. State Department has not provided any comment on the incident. It is a tragic reminder of the dangers that can exist in some parts of Mexico, and serves as a warning for travelers to exercise caution when visiting these areas.
