Manhunt Continues for Suspect in Shooting of Blount County Deputies

A manhunt is underway in Blount County, Tennessee, as authorities search for the suspect responsible for the shooting of two deputies. The incident occurred on February 8 when deputies Greg McCowan and Shelby Eggers initiated a traffic stop on an SUV in Maryville. The driver, identified as Kenneth Wayne DeHart, refused to cooperate and fired shots, striking both deputies. Tragically, McCowan succumbed to his injuries, while Eggers was treated and released.

In response to the shooting, a statewide Blue Alert was issued for DeHart. A Blue Alert is used to rapidly disseminate information to the public in order to assist in apprehending violent criminals who harm law enforcement officers. DeHart is wanted on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and being a felon in possession of a weapon.

McCowan, 43, had recently joined the Blount County Sheriff’s Office in 2020 and was recognized for his bravery in saving a man trapped in a burning vehicle. Eggers, 22, began her career at the Sheriff’s Office in 2019 and currently serves as a patrol deputy.

Additionally, DeHart’s girlfriend, Carrie Matthews, has also been arrested on undisclosed charges.

The reward for information leading to DeHart’s arrest has been increased to $100,000, with numerous organizations and individuals offering support. The Smoky Mountain chapter of the Tennessee police Benevolent Association and the Police Benevolent Foundation have established a memorial fund to assist the McCowan family. Additionally, two fundraisers selling t-shirts and sweatshirts have been set up by the nonprofit Tennessee Blue Line and Pokey’s & Sports in Maryville.

Funeral arrangements have been made for Deputy McCowan, with a motorcade procession and service with police honors scheduled for February 14 at Sevier Heights Baptist Church. The family will receive friends on February 13 at the same location.

As the manhunt continues, anyone with information regarding DeHart’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Blount County Sheriff’s Office or the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
