Man Sentenced to Prison for Shooting at NYPD Car in Brooklyn

A Brooklyn man has been handed a nine-and-a-half-year prison sentence after a daylight shooting incident in Brownsville. The incident, which took place on June 23, 2022, near Legion Street and Pitkin Avenue, resulted in a marked police car being struck by gunfire and a detective being injured by shattered glass.

The assailant, identified as 28-year-old Jah-Mike Woolridge of Brownsville, Brooklyn, was sentenced by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Miriam Cyrulnik on Thursday. Woolridge had pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted assault. In addition to his prison sentence, Woolridge will also serve five years of post-release supervision.

During the incident, Woolridge opened fire on a car that was stopped at a red light following an earlier argument with the 23-year-old driver. He unleashed multiple rounds, hitting the vehicle several times and also firing into the busy intersection. Despite the car being struck, the driver emerged unscathed. Law enforcement later recovered two bullets from within the vehicle.

NYPD Detective Sunjay Verma, who happened to be nearby and witnessed the incident, had a bullet strike and shatter the driver’s side window of his patrol car, causing him injuries from the resulting glass shards.

Despite his injuries, Detective Verma pursued Woolridge, who then retreated into the Brooklyn Gardens housing development. Authorities later found a loaded black pistol and two more bullets inside the damaged police vehicle, highlighting the violence of the encounter.

The shooter managed to evade immediate capture, fleeing the scene of the crime. However, he was apprehended in November 2022 when he was arrested in Maryland by the Fugitive Task Force and the U.S. Marshals.

District Attorney Eric Gonzalez commended Detective Verma’s bravery and stated, “Thankfully, this NYPD detective was spared more serious injuries when this defendant fired a barrage of approximately nine rounds in broad daylight. Today’s sentence holds him accountable for his actions and will help to make the streets of Brooklyn safer.”

The sentencing of Woolridge serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the commitment of the criminal justice system to ensuring their safety..
