Shooter Identified in Houston Megachurch Attack
The shooter who opened fire inside Joel Osteen’s megachurch in Houston on Sunday has been identified as Genesse Moreno, according to police. Moreno allegedly carried out the shooting using an assault-style rifle with the word “Palestine” across it. The incident took place at the Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, one of the largest Christian churches in the US.
Moreno, 36, had a lengthy criminal record and had previously used several male aliases. She entered the church armed with a long rifle, dressed in a trench coat and backpack, and had her 7-year-old son with her. After she began shooting, two off-duty officers returned fire, resulting in Moreno’s death. Unfortunately, the child was caught in the crossfire and sustained a gunshot wound to the head. He is currently in critical condition.
During the incident, Moreno also threatened that she had a bomb. However, upon searching her vehicle and backpack, police found no explosives. The motive behind the shooting has not yet been determined, but police revealed that some antisemitic writings were found in Moreno’s possession. They believe that a familial dispute between Moreno and her ex-husband’s family, some of whom are Jewish, may have played a role.

The heroic actions of the two off-duty officers who stopped the shooter were praised at a press conference. They were commended for their courage in the face of danger and for protecting the worshipers at the church. Authorities also discovered that Moreno had an additional weapon, a .22 rifle, and uncovered anti-Semitic writings, though further details were not given.
Joel Osteen, the lead pastor of Lakewood Church, is one of the US’s most notable religious leaders. The church, with a seating capacity of about 16,000 people, attracts thousands of worshipers each week.
