The Woman Who Was Shot and killed at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston
A woman was tragically shot and killed on Sunday afternoon at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston. According to two senior law enforcement officials, the woman was carrying an assault-style rifle with the word “Palestine” written on it.
The shooter has been identified as Genesse Ivonne Moreno, a 36-year-old woman. During the incident, she made several statements, although the officials have chosen not to disclose their content. It was also revealed that Moreno had previously gone by another, male name.
What makes this incident even more shocking is that Moreno brought her young son with her to the church. She claimed to have a bomb, but a search of her vehicle revealed no explosive devices.
Law enforcement records show that Moreno had a troubling past, with at least six prior arrests since 2005. These included charges such as unlawful carrying of a weapon, evading arrest, and assault on a public official.

In response to the shooting, two off-duty officers at the church returned fire, ultimately killing Moreno. Unfortunately, her son was also struck during the incident and is currently in critical condition. police Chief Troy Finner stated that the boy is approximately 5 years old. One of the off-duty officers is an agent with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, while the other is a Houston police officer.
Authorities are now investigating the motives behind the shooting, considering the writing on the weapon. Terrorism or hate crime-related motives have not been ruled out.
The shooting took place between services as people were arriving for the Spanish service. Lakewood Church is one of the largest megachurches in the country, with approximately 45,000 people attending its services each week.
Joel Osteen, the pastor of Lakewood Church, expressed his shock and sorrow over the incident, stating that he was “in a fog” after the violence. He assured the public that the injured would be kept in his prayers and urged his congregation to rely on their faith to cope with the anguish.
“Our community is devastated by today’s events and grateful for the swift actions of law enforcement,” Osteen stated in a subsequent Facebook post. “Together, we will rise above this tragedy and stand firm in our commitment to love and support one another.”
