HOUSTON (AP) — The motive behind a shooter’s attack at celebrity pastor Joel Osteen’s megachurch in Houston remains unclear as authorities search the suspect’s home in suburban Houston. The weapon used in the attack has been identified as an AR-style rifle. The shooting took place during busy services at Lakewood Church, causing panic among worshippers. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Genesse Ivonne Moreno, was shot and killed by off-duty officers working security at the church. Two other individuals, including the shooter’s young son, were also injured.
The incident unfolded on Sunday, just before 2 p.m., when gunshots rang out inside the former home of the NBA’s Houston Rockets. Houston police Chief Troy Finner revealed that the shooter, dressed in a trenchcoat and armed with a long rifle, entered the church with the young boy. The suspect then began shooting, prompting the off-duty officers to confront and ultimately neutralize the threat. Although the suspect claimed to have a bomb and explosive materials, a subsequent search found no evidence of explosives.
As authorities continue their investigation, attention turns to the victims of the attack. Moreno’s young son, who was initially reported as a 5-year-old, was shot in the head and remains in critical condition. The other victim, a man in his 50s, sustained a gunshot wound to his hip.
Eyewitness accounts shed light on the terrifying moments inside the church. Alan Guity, a long-time member of the church, described hearing gunshots while he and his mother sought refuge in the sanctuary. They lay flat on the floor, praying for safety, until they were given the all-clear to leave. Outside, they encountered a scene of distraught individuals searching for loved ones.

Joel Osteen, the pastor of Lakewood Church, has presided over the church since his father’s passing in 1999.
