Houston Police Continue Search for Motive in Lakewood Church Shooting

Houston police are still investigating the motive behind Sunday’s shooting at Lakewood Church, which left the suspect dead and a 7-year-old child critically injured. The 36-year-old suspect, Genesse Ivonne Moreno, entered the church in the afternoon, exchanging gunfire with officers before being shot and killed.

Police have since discovered a history of mental health challenges for Moreno, as well as anti-Semitic writings she had produced. While a motive has not been officially determined, authorities believe a familial dispute between Moreno and her ex-husband’s Jewish family may have played a role.

During the incident, Moreno used a rifle adorned with a “Palestine” sticker on the buttstock. Police have emphasized that Moreno acted alone and is not believed to be part of a larger group.

Authorities have also revealed that Moreno had used multiple aliases, including the name Jeffrey Escalante. She had previously been placed under an emergency detention order in 2016, indicating a history of dealing with mental illness.

Following the shooting, police executed a search warrant at a Conroe home believed to be connected to Moreno. However, no explosives were found during the search.

The investigation is ongoing, with police still working to determine who shot the 7-year-old child in the crossfire. The child remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Officials have praised the quick response of off-duty officers working security at the church, who shot and killed Moreno to protect the congregation. Agent Adrian Herrera of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission was one of the officers involved and has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

The shooting has left the community in shock. Lakewood Church pastor Joel Osteen expressed his devastation during a press conference, but also expressed faith in God’s control over the situation.

Eyewitness accounts of the incident describe a terrifying scene, with people running and yelling as gunshots rang out. Attendee Joslyn Romero sought refuge in a bathroom, locking and barricading herself inside until the gunfire ceased.

As police continue their investigation, the community mourns the tragedy and hopes for a swift recovery for the injured child..
