Former Employee Kills Three in Shooting Spree at Shipping Company’s Office near Athens

In a tragic incident that has shocked the Greek community, a former employee went on a shooting spree at a shipping company’s office in Glyfada, a seaside resort located about 12km south of Athens. The gunman, identified as a 70-year-old Egyptian national named Aris, killed two men and a woman before turning the gun on himself. The owner of the company, European Product Carriers, was among the victims.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing employees fleeing for their lives. One witness, a worker at the company, recounted the terrifying moments: “I heard the gunshots, I heard the first two. I headed towards the stairs to see what was happening. I saw two guys coming down, they said, ‘It’s Aris with a gun, he’s shooting.’ Of course, I dashed outside, towards the garden, and made my way out through the back door of the garage.”

The incident, initially believed to be a hostage situation, was swiftly responded to by the police. A large area around the building was cordoned off, and the elite counter-terrorism unit EKAM, along with fire engines and ambulances, were deployed at the scene. Negotiators tried to defuse the situation for several hours, but sadly, their efforts were in vain as Aris ultimately took his own life.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities have revealed that Aris was a former employee who had recently been fired. The motive behind his deadly rampage remains unclear. Shootings of this nature are rare in Greece, a country with strict gun possession laws, making this incident all the more shocking.
