15-Year-Old in Critical Condition After Alleged Shooting at Southfield Hotel

In a shocking turn of events, a 15-year-old from Ferndale is fighting for his life after being shot by another 15-year-old at a hotel in Southfield on Sunday morning. The incident took place at the Westin Hotel at 1500 Town Center, prompting a swift response from the Southfield police Department.
Authorities received a distressing call about shots fired at 8:42 a.m. on February 11th, prompting officers and fire personnel to rush to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered the victim with a single gunshot wound to the head. Immediate life-saving measures were administered, and the teenager was quickly transported to a local hospital. Tragically, he is currently listed in grave condition.
An investigation into the incident revealed that the victim, a student at Loyola High School in Detroit, was in a hotel room with two other juveniles at the time of the shooting. Disturbingly, they were unsupervised, raising questions about parental responsibility and access to firearms among teenagers.
Southfield Chief of Police Elvin Barren expressed his frustrations, stating, “We see these things play out time and time again, and the story remains the same. Where is the parental supervision, and then how do these teens get access to weapons? I classify this as something totally preventable.”

During their investigation, police discovered two guns in the waistband of one of the other juveniles involved. The 15-year-old from Detroit, who was found with a stolen Glock fitted with an extended magazine and a laser light, was taken into custody. The gun was reported stolen from Flint back in June 2022. Additionally, the teenager had another Glock with an extended magazine in his possession. Police suspect that one of the recovered weapons was used in the shooting.
The Southfield Police Department has presented charges of two counts of carrying a concealed weapon to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office. However, further charges may follow as the investigation progresses. The third juvenile involved in the incident has been identified as a Southfield resident.
